{Guest Post} Road Trip!

Written by: Marika Holmes

As for you, my son, be strong through the grace that is ours in union with Christ Jesus. Take the teachings that you heard me proclaim in the presence of many witnesses, and entrust them to reliable people, who will be able to teach others also.
2 Timothy 2:1-2

Every girl knows the ingredients to a successful road trip is the friend you’re with, good snacks, great tunes and a shopping destination with a high limit credit card. This road trip had all the right ingredients, little did I know then that this particular road trip would change the lives of many into eternity.

We were in the last year of our Master’s Degree when my friend Melanie and I decided to take a last minute road trip to Montreal and shop our stress away. Melanie was the kind of friend who was almost too cool and beautiful to hang out with-you know the kind. The one you wonder, “Why does she want to be my friend?!” But, she did and we had become like sisters over the past 3 years.
The plan was to pile into my little Ford Escort and get as far away from papers, research and professors as we could.

After 3 solid days of shopping, laughing, eating amazing food and walking around Montreal, it was time to go back to reality. On our way home, we told stories and laughed until our stomachs hurt…and then Melanie asked me about my faith. My heart started racing. It was easy to share my darkest secrets with this girl, but to open up and tell her about Jesus was a whole other story. When it came to evangelism- I took the “they will know Jesus by how I live my life” approach rather than preaching it from the hilltops or passing out literature. But here it was- the question. As my heart pounded in my chest, I started to tell her about Jesus, His love for her and how He will never fail her. A few weeks later my beautiful, smart, amazing friend, Melanie, was standing beside me in church giving her life to Jesus.

Since that day, almost 12 years ago, Melanie’s life has shone like a bright light and has reflected the love of our Savior to so many. She has endured pain and trials that no one should have to, but through each one, she proclaims the goodness of the Father. Unlike me, she never hesitates to tell people about how Jesus saved her and how He continues to do so every day.

I thank God for road trips. I praise Him that He trusted me to share the gospel with this incredible person. The road trip for this friendship will never end now, neither will the one for her husband and beautiful children as well as the many she witnesses too every day.

  1. You, my friend, Marika, Holmes, are beautiful. This touched my heart this evening. Only eternity will reveal the fruit of your labour and the obedience you displayed during that road trip. I know Melanie, and am blessed to call her friend as well. How true are the words you have spoken of her. I say we all need to take these “road trips”-for rest and relaxation, and shopping of course! But most of all, to pour out the love of Christ into a needy and searching life. Love you, Meeker!!!
