{Faith} The spirit of heaviness

By: Cindy Morrone

In times of celebration, goodness, miracles, and victories, praise and thanksgiving easily flow from my lips. The thoughts well up from a thankful and filled heart and pour out, in adoration for my King. My mood is joyous and light and security comes from a knowing that every good and perfect gift is from above. (James 1:17) However my praise can turn to grumblings and complaints shadowed by doubt and confusion when the goodness isn’t flowing.

I have most recently truly understood and esteemed the power of praise especially in times of struggle and difficulty. I am learning…..from the Word, by the prompting of the Holy Spirit and by fellow believers’ example and encouragement, that it is in these desperate times that praise is vital.

“…and provide for those who grieve in Zion—to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair….” (Isaiah 61:3)

The ‘garment of praise’ can replace the cloak of hopelessness, fear and anxiety before one is covered and consumed.

For when we praise—to proclaim our love, thankfulness, adoration, dedication, and commitment to our God and recognize and acknowledge His character and goodness—there is nothing, no circumstance, no difficulty, no trial that will defeat us! It’s when we praise Him that we take our eyes off ourselves and the problem and are able to see the coming victory!

“So we say with confidence,
“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.
What can man do to me?” (Hebrews 13:6)

So, join with me and praise in the good times and in the bad times. Let’s, “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18) And like David, a praise warrior, let our God turn our wailing into dancing; remove our sackcloth and be clothed with joy, sing with our hearts and not be silent and give thanks to our LORD and our God forever! (Psalm 31:11)

Dear Heavenly and Gracious Father,
Lord, God it is so difficult sometimes to praise; to give thanks in difficult times. In these times we can be clothed with a spirit of heaviness. Help us Lord to truly understand how to fix our eyes on You. Let praise always be on our lips! Let us praise You always, for You are good and ever loving! I will choose to praise You in the good times and in the bad times! Knowing that You are enough for me, no matter what I am facing or going through. Knowing that You will never leave me, never forsake me and will remain faithful forever (Psalm 146:6). Amen.
